Mork statue unveiled

The bronze statue of former Iola Police Officer Gerald Mork, who was killed in the line of duty July 14, 1985, was unveiled Friday, Aug. 17, in front of the Waupaca County Law Enforcement Center.

In his opening remarks, Sheriff Brad Hardel described how Mork had wanted to be a police offier since he was a child.

Hardel said Mork was influenced by the example of his father, Bill Mork, who served as Waupaca County sheriff for 18 years.

Hardel also noted that Mork had so excelled as a student while attending the police academy at Fox Valley technical College that they named an academic acheivement award after him.

State Sen. Luther Olsen said Mork’s statue “will remind people for generations of one man who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our community.”
