Gruel, Eunice E. (Ferg)

Eunice Emilie Gruel, New London, age 95, was called to her heavenly home Thursday morning, August 16, 2012. Eunice was born in the Township of St. Lawrence in Waupaca County on September 23, 1916, daughter of Albert and Pauline (Steinbach) Ferg. Eunice graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. On December 10, 1936, Rhinard and Eunice were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Weyauwega. They raised their family on a dairy farm in Manawa. Early in her teaching career, she taught at Butternut Ridge, Maple Grove, and Green Valley rural schools. She then taught for 22 years in Waupaca before retiring in 1982. During retirement, Eunice and Rhinard enjoyed various church activities, traveling around the country visiting all 50 states, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed gardening and taking care of all her beautiful flowers. Her grandchildren and their families enjoyed holiday meals at her home; the great-grandchildren especially remember her moon muffins, banana cream pie and raspberry torte. She is survived by her brother, Leo Ferg; son-in-law Howard Thern and daughter-in-law Charlene Kawleski. Five grandchildren: Allan, granddaughter-in-law Chris Thern, their children: Emalie, Olivia, Isaiah, and Alicia Thern; Kurt (Gina), their children: Brock, Haden, and Kaia Thern; William (Patti), their children: Tayler, Dustin, and Alaina Thern; Allison (Jamie), their children: Soren and Magnus Machtan; Jeffrey (Lori) their children: Sydney and Norah Gruel; sister-in-law Ruby Ferg; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rhinard Gruel, son David Gruel, daughter Carol Thern, brothers: Harry (Dorothy) Ferg, Wesley (Eunice) Ferg and Albert Ferg, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Walter (Mildred) Gruel and Leonard (Mildred) Steinbach, and sister-in-laws, Clara Ferg, and Delores Ferg. Funeral services for Eunice were held on Monday, August 20, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Manawa with Rev. Bill Sutlief officiating. Burial is in the Little Wolf Cemetery, Manawa. Visitation was held at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
