Thunderbirds host invitational

Iola-Scandinavia’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams opened the season Aug. 28 by placing sixth and eighth, respectively, at the Thunderbird Invitational at the Iola Winter Sports Club.

Chase Przybylski and Emily Sether turned in the fastest times for the boys and girls.

Przybylski finished 19th in 19:49. Other places and times included Westley Peterson, 23rd (20:04); John Faldet, 28th (20:32); Matt Jarosh, 37th (21:37); and Josh Elmhorst, 50th (22:58).

Sether crossed the finish line in 19:02, good enough for 13th place. Other times and finishes included Shelby Trzebiatowski, 41st (20:43); Natalie Gauerke, 42nd (20:45); Ellen Oligney, 66th (22:36); and Krystal Tysdal, 67th (22:39).

Team scores for the boys were Freedom (28), Amherst (100), Clintonville (108), Wabeno (112), Winneconne (122), Waupaca (122), Bonduel (164), Iola-Scandinavia (229), Stevens Point Pacelli (255), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (258), Gillett (295), Menasha St. Mary Central (312), Marion (341) and Oconto (398).

Team scores for the girls were Freedom (17), Bonduel (97), Waupaca (103), Gillett (137), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (146), Iola-Scandinavia (157), Winneconne (165), Menasha St. Mary Central (187), Amherst (194), Wabeno (265) and Oconto (299).

The girls’ middle school team placed sixth with 150 points. Leighten Fischer led the way by placing ninth in 11:52. Other places and times included Jada Beacom, 15th (12:30); Payton Wester, 38th (13:34); Haley Ullom, 41st (13:45); and Natalie Rustad, 47th (14:06).

The T-Bird boys’ middle school team had only four runners and did not place among the five teams. Places and times included Gunner Grenlie, 20th (12:24); David Schmies, 31st (13:43); Erick Kriewaldt, 41st (14:18) and Garret Brown, 43rd (14:35).

The T-Birds competed in the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Invitational Sept. 4 and will compete at the Stevens Point Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, before heading to Portage County’s Standing Rocks County Park Tuesday, Sept. 11, for the Amherst Invitational. The middle school race is set to start at 4 p.m., with the varsity race to follow at 4:30 p.m.
