Cardinals shut down Thunderbirds’ ground game

Iola-Scandinavia scored on a big play, but it wasn’t enough in a 28-7 loss to Stevens Point Pacelli Sept. 21 in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference football matchup.

The Thunderbirds got on the scoreboard first with Nick Wavruk’s 60-yard pass to John Prahl, but the Cardinals tied the game later in the first quarter and added two more touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth.

Mike Fuller tied the game with a 1-yard run and gave the Cardinals a boost in the third quarter with a 61-yard fumble return and a 30-yard interception return.

He capped his four-touchdown game with a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The T-Birds had a 10-8 advantage in first downs and outgained the Cardinals 78-20 through the air, but Pacelli outgained the visitors 135-27 on the ground.

The T-Birds’ 27 rushing yards came on 41 attempts. Prahl led the team with 28 yards in three carries and also caught five passes for 78 yards.

I-S fell to 1-3 in CWC-8 play and 2-3 overall and will head to Manawa at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, to take on the Wolves.
