Volleyball team to host Freedom

Fox Valley Lutheran handed Waupaca an Eastern Valley Conference volleyball loss Oct. 4.

Despite dropping all three games 25-19, coach Bret Rodenz said his team showed some bright spots.

“We came ready to play and had a lot of good things happen for us,” he said. “However, we still continue to find ourselves getting stuck in little ruts that put the game out of reach for us. Our intensity on the court is a lot better. We just have to find ways to stop the five- and six-point runs against us.”

Team leaders included Mikaila Johnson (nine kills), Sydney Brooks (five kills), McKenna Plunkett (four kills), Nicole Donaldson (12 assists) and Mandy Tomlinson (eight digs).

“Nicole and Alyssa Nicewander did a great job getting sets to our hitter the best that we could,” Rodenz said. “We still need to work on getting the first pass closer to the net to give us more options.”

The Comets traveled to Ripon Oct. 9 and will host Freedom at 7 tonight (Thursday, Oct. 11) for Parents’ Night. Waupaca will also open state tournament play Tuesday, Oct. 16, with a Division 2 subregional. Waupaca’s regional includes Antigo, Black River Falls, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, Lakeland, Medford, Mosinee, Nekoosa, Northland Pines, Onalaska, Sparta, Tomahawk, West Salem and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Tournament brackets will be posted later this week on www.wiaawi.org.
