An edible planet
Take an apple and a knife. Use your imagination and pretend that the apple is our planet earth. You can learn a lot from this one apple.
Cut the apple into four pieces that are approximately the same size. Three out of four of the pieces resemble the size of our oceans. Only one fourth is land.
Take the one fourth of land and cut it in half; one half resembles land that cannot be lived on: the poles, deserts and high mountain ranges. The one eighth left is land that we can live on.
More than 6 billion people are trying to live on this tiny piece of apple!
Cut the leftover piece into four; three out of the four pieces represent the land that cannot be used for agriculture or other sources of nutrition because the climate is simply too dry – this also includes our city buildings and streets.
A tiny piece of apple is left in your hand: peel off the skin – what you have left is the land on which livestock can graze and can be used for agricultural products.
All of us are completely dependent from this leftover tiny piece of our planet – we have to treat it with respect!
