Crash shuts down U.S. 10

Eastbound U.S. Highway 10, between Old State Highway 49 and State Highway 49, was closed for several hours Monday, Nov. 12 after an accident involving two semis.

Sgt. Todd Rasmussen, of the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department, said the crash occurred at 6:05 a.m.

He said the drivers of the semis were both eastbound on U.S. 10 and “for whatever reason, one of the semis went out of control and into the other. That vehicle then rolled onto its side.”

The semi that rolled onto its side was carrying cattle.

How many cows were in the semi was not known, Rasmussen said.

“Some had to be put down,” he said.

Others got out and took off.

“There could be six to ten running around,” Rasmussen said.

Cattle haulers were on the scene to help.

The drivers of the two semis were both transported to Riverside Medical Center.

Rasmussen said the driver of the semi that rolled had to be extracated.

There was a second accident as a result of the cows getting out of the semi and onto the highway, but there were no injuries, he said.

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Weyauwega Police, Fremont and Weyauwega ambulance, Fremont and Weyauwega fire departments, Waupaca County Emergency Management and the Waupaca County Highway Department.
