There’s still plenty of boys’ basketball to be played in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference this season, but Amherst already looks like a contender.
The Falcons, playing only their third game of the season, headed to Weyauwega-Fremont Dec. 7 and returned home with a 69-43 win over the Indians. W-F had opened the season with three wins, including a 52-37 decision Dec. 4 in the CWC-8 opener.
Amherst 69, W-F 43
WEYAUWEGA – Joel Biadasz and Caleb Glennon combined for 29 points to lead the Falcons over the Indians.
Amherst led 16-6 after one quarter, 28-18 at halftime and 52-26 after three quarters.
A Tanner Ross basket cut the Falcons’ lead to 32-20 early in the third quarter, but the Indians never got any closer, as Amherst outscored the home team 24-8 in the third quarter.
“We were never really in sync from the start,” coach Andy Schroeder said. “This was a much tougher opponent for us. At halftime, the speech was, ‘We have to execute better and work hard.’ The good news is we have another game on Tuesday.”
Ross led the Indians with 13 points, while Biadasz and Glennon scored 15 and 14, respectively, for Amherst.
W-F 52, Manawa 37
MANAWA – A 22-8 advantage in the fourth quarter helped the Indians pull away from the Wolves.
The Indians led 11-7 after one quarter, 23-20 at halftime and 30-29 after three quarters.
W-F’s Lincoln Van Cuick led all scorers with 18 points, while Wesley Krauss led Manawa with 14.
Schroeder said he will rely on Ross’ talents in the paint, but the Indians also have other players capable of scoring.
“We have multiple guys that can score,” he said. “Lincoln is up from the JV team, but he can get 10 points. My son Aaron can get 10 points. We have a lot of options.”
Schroeder expects Shiocton, Stevens Point Pacelli and Amherst to be the front-runners in the CWC-8.
The Indians hosted Wittenberg-Birnamwood Dec. 11 and will head to Bonduel Friday, Dec. 14, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Bears. W-F will also host new London at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in nonconference action.
