Courtney Schmidt scored a game-high 18 points Dec. 21 as the Waupaca girls’ basketball team handed Freedom a 50-35 Eastern Valley Conference loss.
Freedom led 11-4 after one quarter, but the Comets responded with a 16-8 advantage in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Comets added to their lead by outscoring the Irish 15-7 in the third quarter and 15-9 over the final eight minutes.
Waupaca struggled at the free-throw line by hitting only five of 17 attempts, but the Comets hit 21 shots and held Freedom to 11.
Waupaca will host Ripon at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4. The game will begin 45 minutes earlier than usual because Ripon does not have a junior varsity team this season.
