Indians hold off late rally

At first, it looked like a two-hour bus ride in a snowstorm affected the Columbus girls’ basketball team.

The Cardinals managed only two points in the first quarter in their nonconference game with Weyauwega-Fremont Dec. 28 and trailed by as many as 21 points.

The rally came up short, however, as the Indians hung on for a 45-38 win in a game that had been postponed Dec. 21 by the weather.

W-F took a 19-2 lead into the second quarter and led 28-15 at halftime. The Cardinals had cut the lead to 39-29 heading into the fourth quarter and outscored the home team 9-6 over the final eight minutes.

Only two players finished in double figures. W-F’s Jenni Hellweg led all scorers with 20, while Kendra Minick led Columbus with 10.

The Indians will return to Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Stevens Point Pacelli before hosting Iola-Scandinavia Tuesday, Jan. 8.
