Thunderbirds split a pair of games

The Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team split a pair of nonconference games with Tigerton and Marion.

The Thunderbirds handed Tigerton a 45-14 defeat Dec. 27 and fell to Marion 56-46 Dec. 21.

I-S 45, Tigerton 14

I-S held the Tigers scoreless in the first quarter and to two points in the third.

The T-Birds led 11-0 after one quarter, 27-5 at halftime and 33-7 after three quarters before outscoring the home team 12-7 over the final eight minutes.

Emily Sether had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Jane Oligney added 10 points. Emily Wendt scored 10 points to lead Tigerton.

Marion 56, I-S 46

MARION – Brooke Phillips and Natalie Gauerke combined for 25 points in a loss to the Mustangs.

Marion led 14-11 after one quarter and the teams went into the locker room at halftime tied at 25-25. The Mustangs outscored the T-Birds 13-11 in the third quarter and pulled away with an 18-10 advantage in the fourth.

Phillips led I-S with 13 points, while Gauerke added 12 and Kylie Johnson scored nine.

The T-Birds will return to Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at home Friday, Jan. 4, against Manawa before heading to Weyauwega Tuesday, Jan. 8, to take on Weyauwega-Fremont.
