Broomball tournament planned at winter festival

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a broomball tournament during Wintervergnügen in Waupaca.

The Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce is holding the second annual winter festival on Saturday, Jan. 26 on Shadow Lake, off the shore of lower South Park.

The coed, broomball tournament is open to those age 18 and older and has an entry fee of $5 per person.

Six players may be on the ice at the same time, and the deadline to sign up for the tournament is Friday, Jan. 18.

Those who want to participate may sign up at the Waupaca Recreation Center.

Information about the tournament, rules and rosters is also available on the city’s website – www.cityofwaupaca.org – by clicking on the “parks and recreation” department.

The winners of the tournament will receive T-shirts.

Aaron Jenson, the city’s recreation program supervisor, describes broomball as a game played with sawed off broomsticks and a small ball.

“You slide around the on the ice with tennis shoes,” he said. “You can be out there and be active.”
