Hanson, Myron (Mike) Chester

Myron (Mike) Chester Hanson, 90, of Iola, Wisconsin died peacefully on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Iola Living Assistance.

Mike was born on March 4, 1922, in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, to the late Carl Martin and Clara Besson Larson Hanson. He was a 1939 graduate of Waupaca High School and attended the University of Wisconsin, majoring in engineering. Like many young men of his time, World War II and lack of finances ended his education earlier than planned. Mike also missed the farm. Flat feet and a heart murmur left him unable to join the military, so he returned to the farm to contribute to the war effort through his labors on the home front. Mike was employed for over 50 years at the Northwestern, Midland, and Tomorrow Valley Cooperatives first in Sheridan and then Waupaca. He was a great talker and enjoyed sharing stories with the local farmers who came into the Coop. He was inducted into the Waupaca Lodge 208 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in 1952. In the early 50s, Mike’s boss at the Midland Coop, Eugene Henke, introduced Mike to his sister-in-law and that woman, Mildred K. Meyer, became his beloved wife of 56 years. They married on June 23, 1956 at Farmington Lutheran Church and raised three children on their farm near Amherst. Mike enjoyed deer hunting, raising heifers, beef cattle and pigs. He spent many hours reading about the old west. If he could have had a choice about when he lived on this earth, Mike would have been a mountain man of the 1800s, living the life of hunter, trapper, and trader.

Mike is survived by his sisters, Lorraine (the late Norman) Henderson, Spokane, WA; Alice (the late David) Krause, Racine, WI; Betty (the late Albert) Smith, Leadville, CO; sister-in-law, Margery (the late Eugene) Henke, Spring Valley, WI; daughter, Patricia (Curtis) Martin, Madison, WI; daughter-in-law Ginger (the late John) Hanson, Waldo, WI; grandchildren, Sydney Martin, Maxwell Martin, Wesley Hanson, Spencer Hanson and Nicole (Nicholas) Polster, and nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred K. Hanson, his sons Robert D. and John W. Hanson and his brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Farmington Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Sabin officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery following the service. Donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the Farmington Lutheran Church or Iola Living Assistance. His family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Iola Living Assistance for the loving care they gave Mike, and Marcia and Mark Sabin and the Maple Crest Funeral Home for their assistance with arrangements. Mike is greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
