Power play goals hurt Comets

A day after giving up a pair of power play goals in a 3-2 loss to Mosinee in the opening round of the Sentry Classic in Stevens Point, the Waupaca boys’ hockey team handed Green Bay United a 5-3 defeat Jan. 12 in the tournament’s consolation game.

Waupaca 5, Green Bay United 3

Waupaca took a 1-0 lead into the second period and added two goals in each of the next two periods to get the nonconference win over the Gryphons.

Jared Erickson had two goals and an assist for the Comets, while Drew Simonson and Caleb Kiesow added a goal and an assist each; Frankie Ellingson scored a goal; and Beau Ash finished with three assists.

Comet goalie Walker Smith stopped 18 of Green Bay United’s 21 shots, while United’s Will Griswold stopped 35 of the Comets’ 40 shots on goal.

Mosinee 3, Waupaca 2

The Indians converted two of their three power plays to pick up the Great Northern Conference win.

Neither team scored in the first period, but both found the net once in the second.

Erickson had a goal and an assist for Waupaca; Kiesow scored the other goal; and Sam Menzies chipped in with an assist on Erickson’s goal. Erickson’s second goal cut the Indians’ lead to 3-2 with a minute left in the game, but the Comets couldn’t come up with the game-tying score.

Smith had 38 saves as Mosinee outshot the Comets 41-24.

“We both have good power plays, but they got a couple by us,” coach Dave Crisman said. “We have to find a way to get more shots.”

Waupaca played the Fox Cities Stars Jan. 15 and will head to Tomahawk at 7 tonight (Thursday, Jan. 17) for a GNC rematch with the Hatchets.
