Thunderbird girls split games

For one quarter, it looked like the Iola-Scandinavia girls’ basketball team might be able to hang with Amherst.

No so fast.

The Thunderbirds trailed 14-12 after one quarter, but the Falcons went on to outscore the T-Birds 45-26 the rest of the way Feb. 2 in a 59-38 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference contest in Iola.

I-S also picked up a 65-31 win Jan. 29 at Rosholt.

Amherst 59, I-S 38

IOLA – Amherst led 31-23 at halftime and 49 after three quarters before outscoring the T-Birds 10-7 over the final eight minutes.

Brooke Phillips and Jane Oligney led the T-Birds with nine and eight points, respectively, while Amherst’s Jaimee Pitt led all scorers with 21.

I-S 65, Rosholt 31

ROSHOLT – Phillips had the hot hand for the T-Birds against the Hornets, as she led all scorers with 22 points.

The T-Birds trailed 6-4 after one quarter, but took control of the game by outscoring the host Hornets 24-9 over the next eight minutes to take a 28-15 halftime lead.

I-S took a 42-24 lead into the fourth quarter and outscored the Hornets 23-7 in the final period.

Kylie Johnson also finished in double figures for the T-Birds with 14 points, while Char Ann Bonikowske chipped in with nine. Renee Bembenek led Rosholt with eight points.

The T-Birds played at Manawa Feb. 5 and will host Weyauwega-Fremont at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, before wrapping up the regular season against Bonduel and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
