Reiter earns regional title

Jake Reiter was the only Trucker wrestler to advance to sectionals after a day of competition at the Oconto Falls regional on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Several other Truckers placed at regionals, though only the top two finishers in each weight class advance to sectionals.

Reiter was seeded first in the 195-pound weight class. After a first round bye, he pinned a Seymour wrestler in his second round match. He faced a Freedom wrestler for a chance at first place, and won by a 13-4 major decision to capture the 195-pound weight class regional title.

Charlie Poppe finished in third place at 170 pounds. He lost to an Oconto Falls wrestler in their match for first place. Poppe then had to face a Freedom wrestler in a match to determine who would win second place and advance to sectionals. Unfortunately, Poppe came up on the short end of a 5-2 decision and had to settle for third place.

Matt Hill also had a frustrating day in the 220-pound weight class. Seeded second, Hill had a first round bye. He lost his first match by a 9-5 decision after a controversial call at the end of the first period swung the momentum in his opponent’s favor. Hill never recovered from that loss, and was pinned by an Oconto Falls wrestler in his bid to wrestle back for a shot at second place.

Kelvyn Van Laarhoven won his first match, but was pinned in his second and third matches in the 126-pound weight class.

Shayne Collar also placed fourth at 152 pounds. He won his first match, but lost his second by a major decision and was pinned in his third match.

Tim Jerabek placed sixth at 138 pounds; Chase Poppe placed sixth at 145 pounds; and Chase Jung placed sixth at 160 pounds.

Darin Carrigg (132 pounds) and Jordan Streicher (182 pounds) did not place.

Reiter will face Luxemburg-Casco’s Dan Dorner at the 195-pound weight class in the first round of sectionals, and needs to win his first two matches to be guaranteed a shot at state. Reiter will wrestle at the sectionals in Seymour on Saturday, Feb. 16. Matches begin at 10:30 a.m.
