Handschke is state-bound

Brett Handschke will compete at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Feb. 21-23 after placing second at Sectionals in De Pere on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Handschke started the day by earning a 5-3 decision over Victorico Perez of Ashwaubenon. In his second match, he won a 5-2 decision in overtime against Andrew Wojkiewicz of Bay Port.

Handschke faced Pulaski’s Anthony Rottier in the championship match. Rottier earned a 3-2 victory, sending Handschke to the wrestleback bracket.

He faced Danny Nicholson of Green Bay Preble/Green Bay East in the wrestleback match for second place. Handschke earned a 9-5 decision to take second place and earn a trip to state.

Handschke, a junior who holds a 33-13 record this year, will face Myles Devine of Franklin, who owns a 36-8 record, at the Division 1 170 pound weight class bracket. Matches begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21.

Seven other New London wrestlers also competed at sectionals.

Skylar Moderson competed at 106 pounds, but lost his only match by a 1-8 decision.

Jake Close wrestled at 120 pounds. He won his first match by a 6-2 decision, but lost his second via pin.

In the wrestleback, Close won his first match by a tech fall 15-0. In the match for second place, Close lost by a 4-10 decision.

Austin Wyngaard wrestled at 145 pounds, winning his first match by a 10-6 decision. He lost his second match by a 2-7 decision, and lost his wrestleback match by a 2-3 decision.

Andrew Moser wrestled at 152 pounds, winning his first match by a 6-4 margin. He was pinned in his second match. In the wrestleback, he earned a 1-0 decision but fell in the match for second place by a 2-7 decision.

Tommy Thurber wrestled at 160 pounds, but lost his only match by pin.

Austin Postel competed at 182 pounds, but lost his only match by a 9-10 decision.

Justin Behnke wrestled at 195 pounds, but was pinned in his only match.
