The Weyauwega-Fremont boys’ basketball team’s stay in the state tournament turned out to be short and not very sweet.
Tanner Ross scored a game-high 23 points, but the Indians still came out on the short end of a 56-47 score Feb. 19 to Menasha St. Mary Central in a Division 4 quarterfinal in Weyauwega.
Both teams scored 11 points in the first quarter, but the Zephyrs outscored the Indians 18-11 in the second quarter to take a 29-22 halftime lead.
W-F chipped away at the lead and was able to cut it to two points twice in the third quarter, but the Zephyrs took a 38-33 lead into the final period and outscored the Indians 18-14 over the final eight minutes.
Ross was the only W-F player to score in double figures, while Richard VandenBranden and Seth Wallace scored 17 points each for the Zephyrs.
St. Mary Central advanced to a regional semifinal matchup with Shiocton with the win.
