Wildcats eliminate T-Birds

Iola-Scandinavia’s season came to an end March 1 with a 36-30 loss to Wild Rose in a Division 4 girls’ regional semifinal.

The Thunderbirds, seeded third in their regional, also opened the state tournament Feb. 26 with a win over Plainfield Tri-County.

WILD ROSE – The T-Birds led 16-15 at halftime, but were outscored 21-14 in the second half.

I-S trailed 9-8 after one quarter. Wild Rose outscored the visitors 11-5 in the third quarter and 10-9 over the final eight minutes.

Brooke Phillips and Kylie Johnson led I-S with nine and eight points, respectively, while Emily Sether pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

IOLA – The T-Birds had no trouble with the sixth-seeded Penguins, outscoring them 15-4 in the second quarter and 20-2 in the third.

I-S led 16-14 after one quarter, 31-18 at halftime, 51-20 after three quarters and had an 11-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Johnson had a big night with 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Phillips also finished in double figures with 15 points. Karina Welch added 10 points and five rebounds; Sether finished with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals; and CharAnn Bonikowske chipped in with six points.
