Hot-shooting Apaches too much in state semifinal

The Amherst boys’ basketball team’s first trip to state since 1998 ended with a 49-29 loss to Auburndale March 7 in a Division 4 state semifinal.

Auburndale outscored the Falcons 14-4 in the first quarter, led 24-15 at halftime and had a 25-14 advantage in the second half.

Caleb Glennon scored 14 points to lead Amherst, but no other player made more than one basket, as the Falcons hit only 12 of their 42 shots.

Austin Hawkins set a new Division 4 shooting percentage record by hitting 10 of his 11 shots and led the Apaches with 20 points. Auburndale also set a new division record by hitting 64.3 percent of their shots (18 of 28).

Amherst ended its season with a 22-4 record, while Auburndale improved to 26-1 and will play Whitefish Bay Dominican for the Division 4 state title March 8.
