Indians hope to build on success

It’s been quite a school year so far at Weyauwega-Fremont High School.

W-F volleyball and girls’ basketball teams wrapped up the fall and winter seasons with a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference championship and many of those athletes are now getting ready for the upcoming softball season.

“I’m definitely hoping that it carries over,” coach Todd Breuer said. “I don’t know how many times I’ve heard it from different people, ‘Well, you win conference in softball, that’d be all three sports.’

“I’m trying to get in the girls’ heads that that’s not our goal,” he said. “Our goal is to take care of business every single day in practice and get better every game. If that means winning conference, great. If not, so be it. I don’t want them thinking that we have to win conference. I want them thinking that we have to do our job and get better every day.”

The team recently returned from a six-game trip to Florida. Although the Indians came up short in five of their six games, they did have the opportunity to get outside and play, unlike most other area teams.

“We played some pretty good teams down there,” Breuer said. “We didn’t play our best softball down there with the excitement and the travel and the fatigue. We were kind of inconsistent in all three phases, whether it was batting one game or defense or pitching. We put all three of them together in our last two games. We lost to a very good team by one run and won our last game. We’re back in the gym this week, so I just hope it’s not a setback. It definitely has to be to our advantage to get outside and play against some good competition.”

The weather has affected the early schedule, but Breuer hopes his team is able to host Shiocton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the CWC-8 opener.

“We’re going to be working hard trying to get (the field) ready,” he said. “If not for that game, by the Thursday game. The weather looks like it’s warming up into this week. We’ve been plowing the snow off of the field, so if we can just get three or four days of warm weather, I think we’ll be good to go. We have to make sure that we stay focused on this down time with the snow on the field. Once it goes, we have to buckle up and go.”

The CWC-8 includes last year’s Division 3 state champion in Stevens Point Pacelli.

“I probably say this every year, but I’m going to say it again: Our conference is going to be very competitive,” Breuer said. “Every team in our conference can realistically beat anybody else on a given day. You can’t count Pacelli out, they’re the state champs from last year. We’ve never swept Amherst since I’ve been coaching. I think Iola’s going to be improved. They had a young team last year with a lot of freshmen and pretty good pitching. Manawa has one of the best pitchers in the conference in Ansley Block. Conference is not going to be given to us, that’s for sure.”

The Indians’ schedule includes games at Iola-Scandinavia and Amherst in early April.

“That’s going to be a good measuring stick for us as far as where we’re at,” Breuer said. “It can be deceiving because you face them the second time and they’re that much more improved. One or two players can make a big difference. We can’t look at Amherst or Pacelli or Iola. Whoever we’re playing, we have to make it count and give them our best game. If we let our guard down, we’ll let one slip away.”

The Indians will again rely on the pitching arm of senior Kelsey Akey. She posted a 9-5 record on the mound in CWC-8 games last season, as well as a 2.18 ERA.

“She knows she has to get things done,” Breuer said. “She’s not going to strike 10 batters out in every game, but she’s very capable of getting flyouts and groundouts and not letting them get a good pitch. She has the defense behind her to make plays. We have a lot of players that can make great players and bail Kelsey out if she makes a mistake.”

Breuer is also looking for big things at the plate.

“I truly believe this is going to be one of our best hitting lineups that we’ve had in a long time,” he said. “A lot of teams talk about their 1-5 or 1-6 hitters, but I’d like to say we have eight solid hitters this year. We have to score runs. We’re not always going to hold teams to one or two runs. We have the players to do that.

“I think they’re very motivated,” he added. “We have a lot of good leaders out here, which helps. They have confidence in what they can accomplish and I think that’s going to get us a long way. A lot of that does carry over from the other sports.”
