Comets off to 4-1 start in Eastern Valley

It’s still early in the season, but the Waupaca Comets have already emerged as one of the baseball teams to beat in the Eastern Valley Conference.

The Comets improved to 4-1 April 22 with a 4-1 win over Clintonville. Waupaca also split a doubleheader April 20 with Fox Valley Lutheran and opened the season April 16 by sweeping a pair of games from Freedom.

Waupaca 3, Clintonville 1

CLINTONVILLE – Three Clintonville wild pitches helped the Comets knock off the Truckers.

Clintonville opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Waupaca came up with all three of its runs in the fourth.

Zander Neuville went the distance to pick up the win on the mound.

Waupaca 8, FVL 1

WAUPACA – Neuville came up big at the plate with a three-run homer in the sixth, while teammate Beau Ash drove in a pair of runs in the fifth.

Josh Houtman got the win on the mound. Neuville finished with three of Waupaca’s eight hits and Nate Nelson added a pair of RBIs.

FVL 6, Waupaca 5

WAUPACA – The Comets were close to sweeping the Foxes, but FVL’s Derek Ashman drove in the tying and winning runs with a single in the fifth.

Ash took the loss on the mound for the Comets.

Waupaca 3, Freedom 1

WAUPACA – Joe Nelson’s two-run double in the bottom of the fourth turned out to be the difference in the game and also picked up the win on the mound.

Jake Reedy had all three of Waupaca’s hits.

Waupaca 13, Freedom 4

WAUPACA – Reedy’s big day at the plate continued with three hits and five RBIs as the Comets scored in all seven innings.

Nate Nelson got the win on the mound.

The Comets hosted Clintonville April 23 and are scheduled to play Weyauwega-Fremont at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27, during the Weyauwega-Fremont Invitational in Weyauwega.
