Hits come early, often for Comets

A shorthanded Waupaca baseball team picked up a 16-5 win over Weyauwega April 27.

Waupaca also dropped an 8-3 Eastern Valley Conference decision to Clintonville April 23 one day after knocking off the Truckers on their home field.

WEYAUWEGA – The Comets were missing a number of players due to a New York City choir trip, but still managed to get the win.

A seven-run second inning that included a two-run home run from winning pitcher Brandon Nowak, gave the Comets a 9-0 lead after Alex Hoffman drove in a pair of runs with a single in the too of the first.

Corbin Billington hit a two-run homer in the second to put W-F on the board and the Indians came up with another run in the second and two in the third to cut the lead to 9-5, but Waupaca pulled away with three runs in the third and four more in the fifth.

Clintonville 8, Waupaca 5

WAUPACA – Kolin Kubitz’s two home runs and five RBIs helped the Truckers defeat Waupaca.

Clintonville took a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three more in the second, but Waupaca tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Truckers regained the lead with three runs in the fifth.

Clintonville outhit Waupaca 12-7, but committed three errors.

Hoffman led Waupaca at the plate with two hits, while Josh Houtman took the loss.

The Comets returned to EVC play April 30 with a doubleheader at Winneconne and will head to Stevens Point Friday, May 3, for a 4:30 p.m. rescheduled nonconference game. Waupaca also has an EVC doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, May 4, at Appleton Xavier. The next home games are an EVC doubleheader Saturday, May 11, against Little Chute.
