Indians have share of CWC softball title

Another season, another girls’ conference championship at Weyauwega-Fremont High School.

The Indians wrapped up at least a share of the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference softball title May 6 with a 17-3 win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

W-F finished conference play with a 6-1 record. Amherst, which knocked off Manawa 4-2 May 6, is 4-1 in league play and still has two conference games remaining.

The championship is the third this school year for a W-F girls’ sports team. The volleyball team won the CWC-8 last fall, while the basketball team shared a championship this winter with W-B and Amherst.

W-F 17, W-B 3 (5 inn.)

WEYAUWEGA – W-F scored 14 runs in the first three innings of the first game, with six in the first, five in the second and three in the third before adding three more in the top of the fifth.

Karissa Akey had three of the Indians’ 13 hits in the game, while Kelsey Akey went the distance and scattered five hits to get the win on the mound.

W-F 15, W-B 3 (5 inn.)

WEYAUWEGA – Macey Schoenick’s home run was one of 14 hits for the Indians in the second game. Mariah Hulbert added three hits, while Kori Looker chipped in with two. Kelsey Akey got the win on the mound.

W-F 8, Manawa 3

MANAWA – Karissa Akey had four hits in four trips to the plate and drove in a pair of runs as the Indians picked up a nonconference win over Manawa, the team that handed W-F its only CWC-8 loss of the season.

Manawa took a 1-0 lead into the third inning, but the Indians came up with four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Schoenick and Kelsey Akey each had two of the Indians’ 11 hits and Kelsey Akey got the in on the mound.

The Indians will close out the regular season with three nonconference road games. W-F will head to Bonduel at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, May 9); travel to Iola-Sacndinavia for a 4:30 p.m. rematch with the Thunderbirds Friday, May 10; and head to Stevens Point Monday, May 13, for a 4 p.m. rematch with Pacelli.

State tournament games will begin Thursday, May 16.
