Comets outscore teams 48-0 in last four games

A late-season surge has the Waupaca Comets right in the thick of the Eastern Valley Conference baseball race.

The Comets improved to 12-2 in EVC play with a pair of doubleheader sweeps over Berlin and Little Chute.

Not only did Waupaca pick up four wins over the Indians and Mustangs, they also outscored them 48-0. The Comets handed Berlin 18-0 and 12-0 losses May 13 and knocked off the Mustangs 12-0 and 6-0 May 11. The Comets also dropped a 9-1 nonconference game May 10 to Hortonville.

Waupaca 18, Berlin 0 (5 inn.)

WAUPACA – Zander Neuville held the Indians hitless, had three of his team’s 15 hits and drove in a pair of runs in the opener. Jake Reedy added three hits, while Beau Ash added a pair of RBIs.

Berlin 0 (5 inn.)

WAUPACA – Reedy homered, Jared Erickson drove in four runs and Alex Hoffman, Neuville and Brandon Nowak had two hits each in the nightcap. Johnny Popham picked up the win on the mound and allowed only one hit, David Miracle’s double.

Waupaca 12, Little Chute 0 (5 inn.)

WAUPACA – Ash gave the Comets an early lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Comets added another run in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth.

Ash finished with three hits and four RBIs, while Josh Houtman, Alex Hoffman, Neuville and Nowak added two hits each.

Joe Nelson struck out five batters and went the distance to get the win.

Waupaca 6, Little Chute 0

WAUPACA – Houtman struck out six batters to get the complete-game win.

The game remained scoreless until the Comets put five runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning before adding one more in the seventh.

Ash and Reedy each had two of Waupaca’s six hits. Ash came up with a two-run double in the sixth and Reedy belted his sixth home run.

Hortonville 9, Waupaca 1

HORTONVILLE – Nate Nelson took the loss in Hortonville.

The Comets will wrap up the regular season with a pair of games against Ripon, another team still with a chance to win the conference title. Waupaca will host the Tigers at 4:45 p.m. Monday, May 20, before heading to Ripon Tuesday, May 21, for a rematch.

State tournament play begins Friday, May 24.
