Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team avenged a loss earlier this season to Weyauwega-Fremont and handed the Indians a 4-2 nonconference defeat May 10 in a rematch of Central Wisconsin 8 Conference teams.

The Thunderbirds took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning after coming up with two runs in the first, one in the third and one in the fifth.

W-F came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but never got any closer.

Brooke Phillips came up with four of the T-Birds’ nine hits with two home runs, a single and a double and also drove in all four of her team’s runs.

Teammate Kylie Johnson doubled to start the game and Phillips followed with a two-run homer. Johnson doubled again in the third and later scored on a Phillips single by Phillips, who added a solo home run in the fifth.

Johnson and Jane Oligney each had two doubles for the T-Birds, while Karina Welch had a single to account for the T-Birds’ nine hits.

Brianne Huettner went the distance to earn the win, while Kelsey Akey took the loss.

Both teams have a bye in the first round of the state tournament and will host a Division 3 regional semifinal Tuesday, May 21.
