Draftees observe 70th anniversary

Local veterans met May 14 to observe their 70th anniversary of entering service.

Attending the reunion were seven members of the 57 who were selected in the Feb. 11, 1943, draft.

The Waupaca County draftees first met in 2004, and they have met annually on Feb. 11 ever since.

This year’s event had to be postponed because of poor weather.

Attendees were: Willard Saase, Clintonville; Richard Kruske, Waupaca; Evan Voss, New London; Chet Krause, Iola; Robert Loss, Kenosha; James Jeffers, Green Bay; and Reuben Roehl, Wausau.

The group ranges in age from 88 to 90.

They met at Bucky’s Restaurant in New London in honor of the late Robert Besaw, founder of Bucky’s, who was also a draftee with the group.
