T-Bird girls tie for second in CWC-8

Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team wrapped up a tie for second place in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference May 13 with an 8-6 win over Amherst.

The Thunderbirds and Shiocton finished with a 5-2 record in CWC-8 play behind Weyauwega-Fremont, which finished 6-1.

The T-Birds also picked up a 2-0 win over Amherst and wrapped up the regular season May 16 with a 4-2 loss to Markesan.

IOLA – The first matchup between the T-Birds and Falcons was a hitter’s game that featured 24 hits, while the second game was a pitcher’s duel with two runs and 10 hits.

Payton Erickson went the distance to earn the victory in the first game, allowing 11 hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Brianne Huettner went the distance to earn her first shutout victory in the second game. She gave up two hits and two walks and finished with 11 strikeouts.

Brooke Phillips had four hits on the day that included two run-scoring doubles in the first game. Kylie Johnson, Mariah Oppor, Jane Oligney and Huettner each had three hits for both games. Johnson, Oligney, Huettner, Karina Welch and Kiara Boutwell each had a double in the first game. Huettner also had a triple in the first game and a double in the second game, while Erickson had two hits in the second game, including a double.

Markesan 4, I-S 2

MARKESAN – I-S rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2, but surrendered two runs in the bottom half of the same inning to drop the nonconference game.

Going into the game, Markesan was ranked eighth in the Division 4 state coaches’ poll.

Huettner pitched the final two innings and took the loss. She allowed five hits and no walks while striking out one batter. Erickson started the game in the circle and pitched the first four innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out five.

Oppor doubled and scored on a Brooke Phillips double and Phillips scored on Oligney’s single.

Huettner had two hits for the T-Birds, including a double in the second inning.

The T-Bird junior varsity team won its lone game of the week by upending Plainfield Tri-County 26-0 May 14 to finish the season with a 7-7 record.

The T-Birds opened state tournament play May 21 at home against Amherst. The winner of that game will play for a Division 3 regional championship today (Thursday, May 23). The T-Birds are seeded second, while Laona/Wabeno received the No. 1 seed.
