Comets edge Bulldogs at regional

Waupaca and New London’s boys’ golf teams each carded an 18-hole round of 329 May 21 at a Division 1 regional at Waupaca’s Foxfire Golf Club.

The Comets went on to win a two-hole playoff with the Bulldogs to advance as a team to the De Pere Sectional, held May 28 at Ledgeview Golf Club in De Pere.

Waupaca isn’t the only area team that moved on to the sectional round, as Iola-Scandinavia and Weyauwega-Fremont finished second and third, respectively, at a Division 3 regional May 21 at Iola’s Glacier Wood Golf Club. Both teams competed May 28 at the Weyauwega-Fremont Sectional at Foxfire.

Four other area golfers also qualified as individuals. New London’s Austin Elsner and Tyler Fenske moved on out of the Waupaca regional, while Manawa’s Donny Sell and Austin Dean advanced out of the I-S regional.

Division 1

WAUPACA – Waupaca placed four of its golfers in the top 20. Turner Kelly led the way with a 79 to tie for ninth place overall, while Ben Stone shot an 82 to finish 14th, Max Hansen tied for 15th with an 83, Shaun Plunkett shot an 85 to finish 20th and Logan Walters tied for 25th with an 89.

“The team is playing very well as of late,” coach Tom Noltner said.

New London’s Elsner tied for third with a 76, while Fenske tied for ninth with a 79. Other scores for the Bulldogs were Trystan Kempf (86), Eric Sperger (88) and Jake Schmidt (89).

Shawano’s Braden Mueller turned in the meet’s low round with a 74. Appleton East won the match with a 308, followed by Shawano (323); Wisconsin Rapids (326); Waupaca and New London (329); Appleton West (348); Appleton North (353); and Hortonville (362). Appleton East, Shawano and Wisconsin Rapids also qualified as a team.

Division 3

IOLA – Sell and Iola-Scandinavia’s Zach Mortenson turned in the lowest round among area golfers, as they each shot an 89 to tie with two other golfers for fourth place overall.

Other I-S scores were Mike Blum (92, tied for 12th); Nolan Wolberg (94, tied for 18th); Andrew Bauer (95, tied for 20th); and Kyle Honken (98), tied for 25th.

W-F’s scores were David Niemuth (90, tied for eighth); Mason Derozier (92, tied for 12th); Cole Hildebrand (93, tied for 15th); Elijah Porter (96, tied for 22nd); and Alex Hulbert (102, tied for 29th).

Manawa’s other scores were Dean (90, tied for eighth); David Blum (101, tied for 27th); Andy Schoenicke (123, tied for 42nd); and Alex Koweleski (126, tied for 45th).

Team scores were Stevens Point Pacelli (345), I-S (370), W-F (371), Oshkosh Lourdes (375), Shiocton (393), Menasha St. Mary Central (396), Manawa (403), Amherst (414), Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (433) and Marion (473).

Pacelli’s Josh Weinberger had the meet’s low round with an 81.

Amherst’s scores were Logan Hermsen, 98, tied for 25th); Joe Kottke, (102, tied for 29th); Marcus Jensen (104, 33rd); Jem Rein (110, tied for 37th); and Jordon Kroplidowski (116, tied for 40th).

Marion’s scores were Jared Sawall (91, 11th); Brian Knight (125, 44th); Brady Hanson (126, tied for 46th); Bradon Schultz (131, 48th); and Ben Cunliffe (156, 50th).
