W-F seventh, I-S eighth at state

Two area boys’ golf teams and one individual wrapped up the season at state.

Weyauwega-Fremont and Iola-Scandinavia finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in Division 3, while New London’s Austin Elsner tied for 14th place in Division 1 June 3-4 at Verona’s University Ridge Golf Course.

Weyauwega-Fremont’s David Niemuth had a two-day score of 162, good enough for a 14th-place tie with Osseo-Fairchild’s Isaac McIlquaham, to lead Weyauwega-Fremont. Other scores for the Indians were Mason Derozier, 33rd (177); Cole Hildebrand, tied for 34th (178); Nathan Benz, tied for 45th (190); and Elijah Porter and Alex Hulbert, 52nd (211). The Indians finished at 703 after carding rounds of 353 and 350).

Andrew Bauer turned in the low round for Iola-Scandinavia by finishing 32nd at 176, while other scores for the Thunderbirds were Nolan Wolberg, tied for 36th (179); Zach Mortenson, 40th (184); Mike Blum, tied for 42nd (187); and Kyle Honken, tied for 45th (190). The T-Birds finished at 724 after rounds of 377 and 347.

“We played all right on the first day, but had some difficulty scoring well,” I-S coach Alan Bauer said. “We improved by 30 strokes as a team on the second day and played up to our standards. Andrew, Mike, Kyle, Nolan and Zach made a great team and represented our school and community well.”

Osseo-Fairchild went on to win the Division 3 title with a 639.

Elsner finished tied with Stevens Point’s Trevor Thomas with a two-day total of 151.
