Diamond Cats go 1-2

The Clintonville American Legion Post 63 Diamond Cats won one game and lost two at the State Tournament last week in Viroqua.

In their first game, the Diamond Cats faced Chilton.

Clintonville scored one run in the second inning, and Chilton scored one in the bottom of the fourth inning, but neither team got much going offensively.

Chilton had a chance to score in the bottom of the sixth inning when a pitch got past Clintonville catcher Kolin Kubitz. A Chilton runner on third broke for home, but Kubitz quickly pounced on the ball and managed to get the runner out before he reached the plate.

With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Austin Paisar beat out a grounder for an infield hit, and Jansen Van Daalwyk followed with another infield hit. Chilton then committed an error, allowing Paisar to score the go-ahead run.

Chilton put a runner on first with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Kubitz threw him out when he attempted to steal second base, ending the game.

In game two, Clintonville led Wisconsin Dells 3-1 with two innings left, but the Diamond Cats gave up six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and would lose to Wisconsin Dells, 7-3.

In their third game, Clintonville needed to win to stay in the tournament. Unfortunately, the Diamond Cats came up on the short end of a 12-5 score, losing to Westby.

The tournament was won by Waupun, and Viroqua took second. Both teams advanced to the National Tournament in Terre Haute, Ind.
