Jaycees donating $15,000 to playground

The New London Jaycees are working with the New London Parks and Recreation Department to enhance the existing playground equipment at Hatten Park.

The New London Jaycees are committed to donating $15,000, over half of the equipment cost for the project, to add playground equipment to the existing set. The new equipment will be geared for children ages 5-12 and will improve the ADA accessibility of the current playground.

The initial interest for the project was a result of the Parks department 5-year comprehensive outdoor plan. A community survey, conducted in the spring of 2013, gave the Jaycees final direction that park improvement was a high priority.

“We looked at many different options for helping the community, but this was clearly what the community was looking for,” said Tammy McCartney, Jaycees Hatten Park Playground Chair.

The total projected cost for the project is $35,861.80. This cost includes the equipment (Wisconsin made), concrete, wood chips, asphalt, and other miscellaneous expenses.

A community build installation is slated for late summer of 2014. Volunteers will be needed over a two-day period for site preparation and equipment installation.

To make this a successful project for the New London community, the New London Jaycees are looking for donations to make up the difference in cost.

Contributions will be recognized both at the park on a recognition sign and at the playground’s grand opening celebration. Anyone interested in donating funds, concrete, wood chips, asphalt, or time, or interested in helping in any other way, contact the Jaycees.
