Mustangs take three of four from Comets

Waupaca dropped an Eastern Valley Conference volleyball match to Little Chute Oct. 3.

The Comets opened the match with a 25-23 win, but the Mustangs came back to win the next three, 25-9, 25-22, 25-11.

“We started off strong,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “Little Chute made some errors and we were playing confidently. Little Chute started making a run after being down 12-23. We came out with the win, but we let them back in the game and lost some confidence after that.”

Team leaders for the Comets included Alyssa Nicewander (13 assists, seven digs, four kills, one ace); Brenna Oleson (five digs, one ace); Josee Waitrovich (nine digs, one block); Macie Davidson (one dig, four kills, one ace, one block); Mandy Tomlinson (20 digs, one kill); Skye Olson (one dig, two kills); Sydney Brooks (three digs, two blocks, seven kills); and Tina Rasmussen, (20 digs, one kill).

Waupaca will host Appleton Xavier at 6:30 tonight (Thursday, Oct. 10) before heading to Howard Saturday, Oct. 12, for the Bay Port Invitational, which gets under way at 9 a.m. The Comets will play Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Fox Valley Lutheran before wrapping up the regular season at home against Ripon Thursday, Oct. 17.

“Little Chute has a nice team with some good players, but I don’t believe we showed them the Waupaca team that has been playing at a much higher level in the previous tournament and games,” Benitz said. “I hope to have a great week of practice and be ready to face Xavier at home on Thursday.”
