Comets drop matches to Ripon, FVL

Waupaca’s volleyball team wrapped up Eastern Valley Conference play by dropping a pair of matches to Ripon and Fox Valley Lutheran.

Ripon took three of four games from the Comets Oct. 17, while FVL needed all five games to get the win Oct. 15.

WAUPACA – The Tigers took control of the match with 25-15 and 25-11 wins in the first two games.

The Comets came back with a 25-15 win in the third game, but the visiting Tigers prevailed 28-26 in the fourth.

“The girls simply took too long to start playing well,” coach Chelsea Benitz said. “They picked it up in the third game, but we cannot expect to win when we don’t show up to play the first two. The coaching staff has stressed the importance of coming out strong and that will be our main point of emphasis in the next few practices and games.”

APPLETON – Waupaca opened the match with a 25-23 win, but the Foxes came back to win three of the next four games.

FVL took a 2-1 lead with 25-18 and 25-12 wins, but Waupaca forced a fifth game with a 25-21 win in game No. 4. The Foxes wrapped up the match with a 15-7 win in the fifth game.

“We started off slow in each of the five games,” Benitz said. “We gave them a few points by making careless errors, but did a great job of staying focused and coming back. FVL has a nice team with some talented players, but we played with them point-for-point much of the match.”

Sydney Brooks had 10 kills, six blocks and four digs.

“Sydney had an impressive game for us as a middle blocker with some assists from Alyssa Nicewander,” Benitz said. “Tina Rasmussen and Mandy Tomlinson, as well as the other back row players, scrapped up some well-hit balls all night. They were glad they competed well tonight, but were disappointed they did not pull off the win.”

Other leaders for the Comets included Brenna Oleson (one ace, 10 digs); Nicewander (two kills, 28 assists, 13 digs); Josee Waitrovich (two aces, six kills, nine digs); Macie Davidson (four kills, two blocks, one dig); Tomlinson (one ace, nine kills, 25 digs); Skye Olsen (three kills, one block); and Rasmussen (25 digs).

The Comets opened state tournament play Oct. 22 by hosting New London. The Comets are seeded seventh in their Division 2 bracket, while the Bulldogs are fifth. The winner of that match will take on FVL at 7 tonight (Thursday, Oct. 24) in a regional semifinal. The Foxes received a No. 2 seed and have a bye in the first round.

The winner of the semifinal match will advance to a regional final at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
