T-Bird girls win CWC championship

Three runners in the top six helped Iola-Scandinavia’s girls’ cross country team win a Central Wisconsin Conference championship.

The Thunderbirds placed first Oct. 17 at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School, while the boys placed fourth. The Weyauwega-Fremont girls placed eighth, while the boys did not field a full team.

Leighten Fischer placed second for I-S in the girls’ race in 16:47, 6 seconds behind Amherst’s Alyssa Niggeman. Emily Sether placed fourth for the T-Birds in 17:08, while teammate Shelby Trzebiatowski was sixth in 17:13. Chase Przybylski placed fourth for the T-Birds in the boys’ race with a time of 18:18.

Caragan Volz had a top-10 finish for W-F, as she finished eighth in the girls’ race in 17:23.

I-S and W-F will compete Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Division 3 Amherst Sectional at Standing Rocks County Park. The girls’ race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., with the boys’ race to follow at 11:30 a.m.
