I-S runners compete at state

For Emily Sether, it was one last time to lace up her running shoes.

For Leighten Fischer, it was an opportunity to see how she stacks up against the state’s top runners.

The Iola-Scandinavia teammates competed Nov. 2 in the girls’ Division 3 race at the WIAA State Cross Country Meet at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Both had respectable showings, as Fischer, a freshman, finished 29th out of 151 runners and Sether, a senior, placed 41st.

Another area athlete who competed with Fischer and Sether in the Central Wisconsin Conference – Amherst sophomore Alissa Niggemann – finished among the leaders, as she placed sixth.

Niggemann crossed the finish line in 15:27, while Fischer and Sether turned in times of 16:11 and 16:25, respectively.

The Clintonville girls’ team was one of three Eastern Valley Conference squads to compete in Division 2 and placed 14th out of 16 teams. Places and times were junior Jessica Petruzates (71st, 16:20); junior Allison Johnson (83rd, 16:32); senior Sara Messner (103rd, 16:53); junior Brianna Gretzinger (107th, 16:55); junior Danielle Kiefer (145th, 18:20); and senior Katie Collier (147th, 18:25).

Kinsey Harmon’s third-place finish helped Berlin place seventh, while Freedom finished 13th.
