Dr. S. Brian McPhail, age 74, of New London, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2013 after an extended illness.
He was born on January 25, 1939 in Saskatchewan, Canada, son of the late Clayton and Margaret (Beckwith) McPhail. On August 5, 1962, he was united in marriage to Kay Mortenson in Crosby North Dakota. Brian was an Optometrist in New London for many years until his retirement. He was very active in his community. He was a longtime member and past council president at the United Church of Christ. For over 40 years, he was a member and Past President of the New London Lion’s Club. He was a member of both the Wisconsin Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association for over 40 years. He served on the board at New London Family Medical Center and also served as president. He also served as President of both the St. Joseph Nursing Home Board and also the New London Chamber of Commerce. Dr. McPhail enjoyed boating, skiing and cooking and reading.
He is survived by his wife Kay; two sons: Greg (Robyn) McPhail, Minneapolis, MN, and their sons Colin and Clayton both of Minneapolis; and Michael McPhail, Chicago; three brothers: Douglas (Faye) McPhail, Grand Forks, ND; Dr. Ronald (Virginia) McPhail, Pensacola, FL; Paul McPhail, Ambrose, ND; two sisters: Joan (Ronald) Lewis, Minneapolis, MN; Elizabeth Taylor, Pensacola, FL; brothers-in-law: Steven (Marjorie) Mortenson, Mosinee; Craig (Rita) Mortenson, Verona. He is further survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service for Dr. S. Brian McPhail will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery in New London. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New London Family Medical Center.
