Iola-Scandinavia’s girls’ basketball team came up short in its Central Wisconsin 8 Conference opener.
The Thunderbirds fell to Wittenberg-Birnamwood 60-17 Dec. 13 on the Chargers’ home court.
W-B led 10-6 after one quarter, 28-12 at halftime and 47-17 after three quarters before outscoring the visitors 13-0 over the final eight minutes.
“We were competitive in the first quarter and executed fairly effectively until the latter part of the quarter,” coach Mark Wester said. “After that, Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s pressure, strength and skill level generally overwhelmed us.”
CharAnn Bonikowske led the T-Birds with six points and also shared rebounding honors with Brooke Phillips with five.
The T-Birds hosted Stevens Point Pacelli Dec. 17 and will head to Shiocton for a 7:30 p.m. matchup Friday, Dec. 20, with the Chiefs. I-S will also host Tigerton at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27.
