Slow start hurts Waupaca girls

Scoring only 10 points in the first half hurt the Waupaca girls basketball team Jan. 3 in a 46-33 nonconference loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

The Comets trailed 11-3 after one quarter and 26-10 at halftime, but stayed in the game with a 12-3 advantage in the third quarter that cut the Chargers’ lead to 29-22.

However, W-B outscored the Comets 17-11 over the final eight minutes.

Macie Davidson and Josee Waitrovich scored eight points to lead Waupaca, while the Chargers’ Mikayla Hartman led all players with 16.

The Comets’ Eastern Valley Conference game at Freedom originally scheduled for Jan. 6 has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1. Waupaca will return to conference play at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, in Ripon before opening a three-game home stand Monday, Jan. 13, against Mosinee.
