Barnhardt keeps winning

Logan Barnhardt’s first season of high school wrestling continued Jan. 11 with an individual championship at the Cutler Classic in New London.

The Waupaca freshman improved to 35-0 on the season and placed first at 113 pounds. He was one of two Comet wrestlers to make the finals at the 11-team tournament, as Levi Petroske placed second at 160 and improved to 33-2 on the season.

Waupaca also picked up an Eastern Valley Conference dual win Jan. 9 with a 37-36 victory over Winneconne that came down to the final match.

Cutler Classic

NEW LONDON – Waupaca placed eighth with 128.5 points. Coleman won the tournament with 284 points, followed by Oshkosh North (215), Ripon (159), Little Chute (152.5), Oostburg (145), New London (143), Menasha (131.5), Waupaca (128.5), Weyauwega-Fremont (86), Appleton East (85) and Sturgeon Bay (54).

“Logan took first and beat a wrestler from Coleman who was runner-up at the Oshkosh on the Water tournament at 113,” coach Tom Reif said.

Waupaca 37, Winneconne 36

WAUPACA – The meet came down to a 120-pound matchup between Waupaca’s Austin Gonyou and Winneconne’s Mike Roycraft.

Winneconne held a 36-34 lead heading into the final match, but Gonyou pulled out a 5-3 win.

The meet featured only six contested matches to go along with eight forfeits.

Waupaca’s other winners included Derrick Rotta’s 12-9 win over Jeremiah Preutz at 145, Petroske’s pin of Ethan Miller in 5:58 at 160, Joe Balicki’s 8-4 win over Josh Bluhm and Blake Thoe’s 11-0 win over Jack Litjens at 285.

Winneconne’s only win came on Sergei Raspel’s pin of Alex Gotto in 2:41 at 138. The Wolves’ other 30 points came on five Comet forfeits.

Waupaca will wrap up the EVC dual meet schedule at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in Freedom before closing out the regular season two days later at a tournament at Wausau East.
