Freedom tops Comets

Now that the regular season is over, the Waupaca wrestling team can turn its attention to regional and sectional meets.

The Comets wrapped up Eastern Valley Conference play Jan. 23 with a 63-18 loss at Freedom. The Irish used five pins and five forfeits to win their 50th consecutive conference dual meet.

Waupaca’s wins came from Logan Bernhardt’s pin of Garrison Murphy in 2:39 at 113 pounds, Levi Petroske’s pin over Ramsey Bloy in 3:09 at 180 and Blake Thoe’s pin of Matt Evers in 1:10 at 285. Petroske’s win means he is the first wrestler in school history to go undefeated in four seasons of EVC dual meets.

Freedom’s pins came from Mason Manteuffel over Austin Gonyou in 1:57 at 120, Austin Jensen over Guy Tessen in 5:30 at 126, Dustin Jensen over Alex Gotto in 1:25 at 138, Seth Vosters over Derrick Rotta in 1:51 at 145 and Adam Vosters over Joe Balicki in 1:34 at 160. Blaz Daul also handed Waupaca’s Mitchell Rotta a 3-1 loss at 152.

The Comets also forfeited matches to Mitch Garvey (106), Cody Walrath (132), Jake VanGrinsven (182), Evan Philibeck (195) and Mason Sturm (220).

Waupaca will join New London, Wautoma/Wild Rose, Fox Valley Lutheran, Little Chute, Omro and Winneconne Saturday, Feb. 15, at a Division 2 regional in Omro, with sectional qualifiers to move on to the Seymour Sectional Saturday, Feb. 22. Wrestling is scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m.
