Don?t turn Waupaca County into sand mining mecca

Do you live in Waupaca County? You might like to know (before it happens) that Ryan Brown, our current county planner, is proposing the creation of Mining Districts in Waupaca County.

A Mining District is created to “protect” land for the purpose of mining. It would become much easier for mining companies to set up mining in these zones. In this zone, building a new home would be deemed incompatible because it might be hazardous for the proposed new residence and thereby would require a Conditional Use Permit.

What would life be like for those who already have homes near these proposed districts? This gives us an idea; some conditions for review at other sand mining zones include on-site sewage disposal, hazardous substances, access to public roads, safety signage, noise, light, shielding for welding equipment, blasting, electrical interference beyond mine property limits, solid waste storage, runoff, and setbacks from current residences, wetlands and waterways.

Mining is already revving up in our county. Just ask the people along County Highway W and Guhl Road in the town of Caledonia about the number of trucks passing their homes in a span of 10 minutes. Think about what it would be like to have mining zones wherever sand exists throughout our county.

What if one of these Mining Districts was placed near you or someone you care about? To see real people talking about their experiences with living in a mining area, go to Frac Sand Mine Neighbors on youtube.com.

You can also e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions about this issue, but more importantly, you could e-mail the people who will be making decisions regarding the creation of Mining Districts in Waupaca County. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], or call Jack Penny who is in favor of the mining of Waupaca County at 715-258-2566.

Let them know we do not want our beautiful county turned into a sand mining mecca for industrial sand mining interests.
