I-S girls split with Pacelli, W-B

Iola-Scandinavia’s girls’ basketball team split a pair of Central Wisconsin 8 Conference games with Stevens Point Pacelli and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

The Thunderbirds cruised to a 61-20 win Jan. 31 at Pacelli, but fell to the Chargers 63-39 Jan. 30.

STEVENS POINT – One look at the final statistics and it’s easy to see how the T-Birds were able to knock off the Cardinals.

I-S connected on 25 of 55 shots – including four of eight three-pointers – and the Cardinals were held to six field goals.

The T-Birds led 18-3 after one quarter, 37-11 at halftime and took a 57-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

Brooke Phillips led the T-Birds with 18 points, while Kylie Johnson and Leighten Fischer added eight points each. Johnson, Natalie Gauerke and Tyisha Weed had four steals each, while Emily Sether and Krystal Tysdal pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively.

IOLA – Mikayla Hartman hit four three-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points as the Chargers kept pace with Bonduel for the CWC-8 lead.

I-S trailed 15-8 after one quarter, 31-26 at halftime and 50-32 after three quarters.

Phillips led the T-Birds with 14 points five rebounds and four steals, while Char Bonikowske added seven points and four rebounds.

The T-Birds headed to Rosholt Feb. 4 for a nonconference game and will host Shiocton at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7.
