Waupaca Area splits pair of games

Girls' hockey team defeats Medford 6-0

February 19, 2014

Five third-period goals lifted Appleton United to a 9-1 nonconference girls’ hockey win Feb. 13 over Waupaca Area.

Waupaca area also wrapped up Great Northern Conference play Feb. 11 with a 6-0 win over Medford.

Appleton United 9, Waupaca Area 1

Mandy Tomlinson gave Waupaca Area a 1-0 lead in the first period, but it turned out to be the team’s only goal. United outshot Waupaca Area 36-12.

Waupaca Area 6, Medford 0

Tomlinson, Tina Rasmussen and Macy Carlson had two goals in the win over the Raiders, while goalie Cassie Rasmussen stopped all 19 of Medford’s shots.

Waupaca Area will head to Milwaukee for the first round of the state tournament. The team received a No. 7 seed in its sectional bracket and will take on No. 2 University School of Milwaukee at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at the Uihlien Ice Arena. The winner will take on Appleton United or Brookfield Central Tuesday, Feb. 25, in a sectional semifinal.
