Caleb P. Bauer, 31, Iola, was charged with a fourth drunken driving offense.
At 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Krueger was dispatched to the intersection of State Highway 49 and Larson Road in rural Waupaca in response to a reported crash. The caller told dispatch it appeared the driver was walking away from the scene.
When Krueger arrived, he found a Jeep in the ditch. The license plate came back as registered to Bauer.
Krueger later found Bauer lying face down in a snow bank on the south side of Larson Road.
Krueger asked Bauer what had happened. Bauer initially denied being in an accident, until Krueger said he found the Jeep in a ditch, according to the criminal complaint.
Bauer then reportedly said he had been speeding when a deer ran into the road.
A preliminary breath test indicated Bauer had a blood-alcohol level of 0.158, the complaint says.
