Falcons eliminate Indians

It’s not easy to beat a team three times in a season.

Amherst’s girls’ basketball team was able to pull it off, however, as the Falcons handed Weyauwega-Fremont a 31-21 defeat March 7 in a Division 4 regional semifinal.

The Falcons led 14-2 after one quarter and 18-8 at halftime. The Indians cut into the lead with a 9-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter, but Amherst outscored the visitors 9-4 over the final eight minutes.

Karissa Akey led the Indians with eight points, while Jaimee Pitt led Amherst with 18. The Falcons went on to win a regional championship the following day with a victory over Menasha St. Mary Central and will take on defending Division 4 state champion Algoma at 7 tonight (Thursday, March 13) in a sectional semifinal in Seymour.

The winner of that game will play Auburndale or Bonduel in a sectional final at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Waupaca High School.
