Looking back in Iola

The history of the Iola & Rural Fire Department will be presented Monday, March 31, in the Iola Historical Society’s vintage fire station.

The program will start after the society’s regular monthly meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Iola has its first three pieces of firefighting equipment still intact and on display at the replica vintage fire station.

Historical society president Cliff Mishler will explain the history of these first three pieces of firefighting equipment.

Then Chuck Fritz, IRFD fire chief , will bring the audience up to date on the fire department’s current equipment, including its newly acquired pumper; his firefighting staff; and data on hours logged for training and fighting fires.

This is a great presentation for both firefighting and local history buffs. The presentation is free, although goodwill donations are always appreciated.

The Iola Historical Society is currently involved in a major renovation program for its museum, The Machine Shed of vintage farm and manufacturing equipment, the original Iola Depot, and a vintage caboose.

The Iola Historical Society’s complex is located on Depot Street off Main Street in downtown Iola.
