T-Bird girls open season with win

Iola-Scandinavia’s softball team split a pair of games over the weekend after opening the season with a win over Manawa.

The Thunderbirds fell to D.C. Everest and defeated Wausau West April 12 in Poynette after picking up a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win on the road.

D.C. Everest 13, I-S 2

POYNETTE – After a 45-minute rain delay, D.C. Everest broke open a 6-2 game with seven runs in the seventh inning for a 13-2 victory.

Pitcher Brianne Huettner went the distance in the losing effort, allowing 13 hits and 11 walks while striking out seven. Everest pitcher Madie Jagodzinski allowed eight hits and finished with 13 strikeouts.

Kylie Johnson, Jane Oligney and Huettner had two hits to account for six of the eight T-Bird hits. Huettner hit a solo home run over the fence in the fourth inning.

I-S 8, Wausau West 0

POYNETTE – I-S scored two runs in the first and second innings and that is all Brooke Phillips needed, as she tossed a two-hit shutout. Phillips walked two while striking out 12.

Johnson, Huettner, Oligney and Jayden Podgorny each had two hits. Huettner and Podgorny each had a double.

“We would like to thank Poynette softball coach Bob Tomlinson and Poynette High School for being gracious hosts to us,” coach Tom Anderson said. “We were originally supposed to play in the Stratford tournament, but poor field conditions wouldn’t allow us to play there. Coach Tomlinson allowed six northern schools – D.C. Everest, Chequamegon, Iola-Scandinavia, Stratford, Wausau West and Wrightstown – to come to Poynette to use their facilities at no charge. It was an incredible gesture on their part.”

I-S 20, Manawa 3 (5 inn.)

MANAWA – Phillips went 4×5 with a double and a triple and Oligney doubled three times to lead the T-Birds’ 19-hit attack April 10.

Johnson, Huettner, Mariah Oppor, Jessica Faldet and Holly Boyle had two hits and Huettner picked up the win on the mound. She allowed four hits and eight walks and struck out six.

The T-Birds are 1-0 in the CWC-8 and 3-4 overall.

The I-S junior varsity team fell to Manawa 6-2.

Weather and field conditions permitting, the T-Birds will host Shiocton today (Thursday, April 17). The team will then travel to Amherst Monday, April 21, for a rescheduled CWC-8 matchup with the Falcons before hosting Bonduel Tuesday, April 22. First pitch for all three games is set for 4:30 p.m.
