Under construction in Weyauwega

The city of Weyauwega’s Community Park is getting a new shelter and restroom.

Construction is under way, and the goal is to get the building open by Memorial Day weekend or the first week in June, said City Administrator Patrick Wetzel.

The city also wants it open before the swim lake opens, which will be the second week in June.

“There was available space. It’s centrally located next to the parking lot and close to the swim lake,” he said of the new building.

The pavilion is being built next to the playground.

“It’ll be just as big as the American Legion Shelter,” Wetzel said.

The city sought bids for the project in February and awarded the bid to W. Much Construction Inc., of Waupaca, for $122,897. The total cost of the project is about $160,000.

That includes construction of the shelter, demolition of the old restrooms in the park, architectural and engineering design and site work.

Wetzel said the old red, white and blue restrooms, located next to the Little Red Schoolhouse, will eventually be torn down.

That building includes a small workshop/garage on the back. Among the items stored there are a mower and tools.

“When we tear the building down, we will have a discussion about possibly converting an existing structure to a garage or building new or transporting equipment,” Wetzel said.

A new use will be determined for the area of the park where the old restrooms currently stand, he said.

For a couple of years, the city looked at building a new restroom in the park, Wetzel said, because the building itself needed to be replaced.

“Last summer, the Recreation Committee was looking at building a new restroom with an attached garage,” he said. “The discussion turned to the first impression when you drive into the park is you see the restroom, and on top of that, there was the potential to add a new shelter.”

The new pavilion will have counter space and electrical, he said.

“On the other side of the park, by the ball field, there is a newer restroom,” Wetzel said. “It’s modeled after that but also a shelter.”

The new pavilion will have a color scheme of color block with forest green trim, matching the newer restroom by the ball field.

“The discussion was going forward, what should the color scheme be,” Wetzel said, explaining that the current buildings in the park are various colors.

The city decided to follow the color scheme of that newest restroom.

Plans also call to add parking stalls near the new pavilion, as well as sidewalk so there is an accessible route to get to all the shelters in that area of the park, Wetzel said.
