Haehnlein faces felony charges

Two new felony cases have been filed against a former Waupaca man with a long criminal history.

Joe B. Haehnlein, 26, Iola, was charged with felony strangulation, misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct as acts of domestic abuse following a May 18 incident.

He was charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia following his arrest on May 24.

On the morning of May 18, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Cameron Durrant responded to a 911 call from downtown Iola.

He spoke to a 21-year-old woman who had a swollen left cheek, red marks on her jaw, scratches on her arm and bruising on her back.

The woman said she and Haehnlein had been arguing and the argument escalated into a physical altercation. She accused Haehnlein of pushing her down, punching and choking her.

According to the criminal complaint, the girlfriend ran away after kicking Haehnlein. He allegedly got into his car and followed her.

Witnesses told police that Haehnlein was yelling obscenities at the woman from the car, then drove away.

On the evening of Saturday, May 24, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Strobusch was westbound on U.S. Highway 10 near State Highway 22 in Waupaca when he observed a tan Ford Thunderbird that belonged to Haehnlein’s girlfriend. He contacted dispatch and learned that the county still had an attempt-to-locate bulletin posted on Haehnlein.

Due to the tinted windows on the Thunderbird, Strobusch could not identify the driver. He followed the car to the Citgo station on Fulton Street, approached the vehicle on foot and identified the driver as Haehnlein.

At the time, Haehnlein’s driver’s license was suspended and there was a Department of Corrections warrant for his arrest, the complaint says.
